Home Rangers George Edmundson

George Edmundson

Who is George Edmundson?

Samuel George Alan Edmundson, or shortly George Edmundson, is an English central defender who plays for the Scottish Premiership club Rangers.

He joined Oldham Athletic on a scholarship in the summer of 2013 and signed a one-year professional deal in 2015.

The centre-half was first included in a senior matchday roster on 22 August of that year, remaining an unused substitute in a 1–1 League One draw versus Shrewsbury Town at Boundary Park.

On 31 August, away to the same opposition, George made his debut in the first round of the Football League Trophy, playing the full match of a 2–0 defeat at the New Meadow.

Two years later, Edmundson joined National League outfit AFC Fylde on a one-year loan deal along with teammate Jamie Stott.

After impressing in his loan stint at AFC Fylde, he returned to Oldham Athletic.
During the 2018–19 term, Edmundson formed a brilliant partnership with veteran centre-back Peter Clarke and was named in the EFL League Two team of the campaign.

Edmundson signed for Rangers in the summer of 2019 for an undisclosed transfer sum, where he claimed the No.4 shirt he wore at Oldham.

George made his European competition debut, starting versus St. Joseph’s of Gibraltar, in a 6–0 Gers victory in the second match of the UEFA Europa League first qualifying round. He netted his first goal for Rangers in a 2–1 win at Ibrox against Hibernian.

Last year, it was announced that Jordan Jones and George had been suspended by Steven Gerrard’s side, pending an internal investigation, for attending a party and breaking COVID-19 regulations.

Earlier in 2021, he joined Derby County on loan until the end of the 2020/21 term. He netted his first goal for the Rams in a 2-0 win over Huddersfield Town on 23 February 2021.

What about George Edmundson’s future?

George looks set for another chance at Ibrox as the Scottish club have decided to retain the services of the star.

He is set to rival Connor Goldson, Nikola Katic, Leon Balogun and Filip Helander for a starting berth in Glasgow next campaign.

The Englishman showed potential during the 2019/20 term, particularly in the UEL, where he put in an outstanding performance away from home against Portuguese club Braga, but it remains to be seen whether George has the chops to cut it as a Rangers regular.
