Who are Hibernian?

Hibernian is a Scottish football club based in the Leith area of Edinburgh, The team was founded in 1875 by the members of Edinburgh’s Irish community. They currently compete in the Scottish Premiership top division of Scotland.

Home games are played at Easter Road, which has been in use since 1893 when the team joined the Scottish Football League. The name of the club is regularly shortened to Hibs,

Hibernians have claimed the four Scottish league championship trophies, most recently in 1952. The club have claimed the Scottish Cup three times, in 1887, 1902, and 2016. Hibernian reached the semi-final of the first-ever European tournament in 1955–56, becoming the first British team to participate in European competition.

Hibs have a local rivalry in Edinburgh with Hearts; the derby game between the two teams is one of the oldest rivalries in world football. It has been described as “one of the jewels of the Scottish game”. Both teams have been champions of Scotland four times, although Hearts have the better record in derby games.

In December 2014, the Scottish outfit said it intended to sell up to 51% ownership of the team to its fans. By November 2017, they had increased their shareholding in the club to 34%. The majority ownership of the team was sold to businessman Ronald Gordon, who became the club CEO.

What are the plans for Hibernian in the 2021/22 season?

Hibernian finished the 2020/21 season in third place in the Scottish Premiership and for the next campaign, they have higher goals as they plan to spend money in the summer and sign quality players who will help them to challenge Rangers and Celtic for the title.

Jamie Murphy, Daniel MacKay and Jake Doyle-Hayes have already joined Hibernian and it is expected to see several new faces to Jack Ross’s side ahead of the 2021/22 season.

Hibs will enter the League Cup, the Scottish Cup and the Conference League.
