Who are Rangers?

Rangers Football Club, commonly known as Rangers or Glasgow Rangers, is a Scottish football team based in Glasgow. Rangers, nicknamed ”Gers”, plays in the Scottish Premiership and are current league champions. Rangers established in March 1872.

Gers are the second-most successful team in world football in terms of titles won, second only to Egyptian club Al Ahly. Dougie Gray holds the record for the most appearances as he played 940 matches for Rangers.

Gers have won the Scottish Premiership trophy 55 times and the Scottish Cup 33 times. Jimmy Smith holds the record for the most goals as he scored 381 goals for Rangers. Gers’ most distinct rivalry is with Glasgow neighbours Celtic.

The two sides are collectively known as the Old Firm. Gers are one of the best-supported teams in Europe. Rangers is owned and operated by The Rangers Football Club Limited (“TRFCL”). On 4 May 2018, Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard was confirmed as the new Gers coach on a four-year deal.

Steven’s era started excellently with the Scottish club remaining unbeaten in their first 12 matches, clinching a place in the UEFA Europa League group stage in the process.

However, Gers were then defeated by Celtic in the first Old Firm game of the campaign, and the following month were eliminated from the Scottish League Cup by Aberdeen.

On 29 December, Gers defeated Celtic at Ibrox to inflict Brendan Rodgers’ first defeat in 13 Old Firm matches.

Gers first victory over Celtic since a Scottish Cup win in April 2016 and their first league victory over Celtic since March 2012.

The 2019–20 campaign began with the Gers again qualifying for the UEFA Europa League group stage before losing 2–0 against Celtic at Ibrox in the first Old Firm game of the season on 1 September.

On 29 December, Gers beat the Hoops 2–1 at Celtic Park, their first win at their arch rival’s stadium since October 2010.
