“It is a funny one because when I signed for Rangers, of course, you’ve got a bit of banter in the changing room and the lads saying about how I’m pals with the gaffer and stuff like that, but he is a natural.
“In terms of the direction he is still fresh and he is new, but you can see that obviously he has everything.
“He always says to the players, ‘if you want to come to talk to me about anything then my door is open’
“He is approachable, which is actually important as a supervisor. Sometimes there is stuff you need to talk about and you may have personal problems and you may have things you want to talk about but feel uncomfortable going to the supervisor.
“However, with Steven, you can talk to him about anything. He reminds me a little bit of Harry Redknapp and Sam Allardyce at which you can just approach them and talk about anything.”
Gerrard and Defoe are now in sporting limbo amid the coronavirus catastrophe, but NHS”heroes” have been hailed for helping to keep the nation ticking over.
“You do not really expect to encounter anything like this in your life,” Defoe added.
“Everybody has got to stick together and I wish to give a major shout out, a thank you, to the NHS; into the doctors, the nurses, the ambulance drivers, the maintenance employees… since this is a massive challenge.
“It’s something we have never faced before so I only need to pay respects to those people since they’re the heroes in this.
“I can only imagine what it’s like the day in, day out having to handle the people coming to hospitals daily.
“I have always admired the NHS; but my adventures when my dad was not well a couple of years ago, and obviously the things I went through with Bradley [Lowery], you see it firsthand.
“I remember going in to visit my father in the hospital and I remember talking to the doctors and nurses and seeing how they work day in, day out; I had been looking at the physicians thinking, ‘Wow, I saw you you were here all day yesterday and today you are back first thing the next day’.
“I have always known that they constantly put in, but with the situation such as this it has gone to a different level.”
