Sunderland have been rumoured to sign Rangers’ Greg Docherty lately and former Celtic player Jackie McNamara believes it would be an excellent move for the midfielder.

McNamara was very complimentary of the Black Cats in whether it would be of advantage and his evaluation of Docherty change.

The Rangers man has experienced League One and revealed he can excel at the level with 21 goal gifts for Shrewsbury last year, so he might be seeking to test himself at a higher level.

McNamara argues that the Stadium of Light can be due to the size of the club and the strain in playing for the north-east outfit involved.

Talking to Soccer Insider, he explained:

“They are a passionate lot down there, so that would be a fantastic move for him as it is still a big club. They will be under pressure, and they need to escape the branch and it will be good for him to learn how to manage that if he is to have a future at Rangers.

“Sunderland are not a League One club, they are special. Yes, they are in that branch, but they are not a League One club in any shape or form. So it may be a fantastic platform for him.”

Supporters will enjoy what the international must say but although there’s truth in his words, they will not help them and mean for Sunderland.

Being a club could create Docherty inclined to join, but at the forefront of his mind how that can be aided by him, and will be his advancement.

Phil Parkinson had a tricky beginning in the Black Cats but he’s turned it around since Christmas with a streak of seven matches without defeat, in addition to showing that he can find the most out of players, with Chris Maguire and Lynden Gooch particularly impressing him under him.

They’ve made five and four-goal assists and goals respectively over the previous five matches and when Docherty looks at their kind that he must be persuaded to make the move, which Keith Downie suggests could now be in doubt.

The appeal of the huge crowds McNamara alludes to should also function Sunderland well, not merely to lure in Docherty but the likes of Bailey Wright, also, who’s also been connected with a move into the north-east.

The odds of signing players should become greater, if Parkinson will continue to get things before the end of the month, and they can have a squad capable of winning promotion.
