Rangers are readying a summer swoop for Premier League centre-back Gary Cahill and are ready to pay him handsomely, according to a recent report from The Sun.
The Englishman has played for four teams in the English top-flight – Crystal Palace, Bolton, Chelsea and Aston Villa – racking up a whopping 394 appearances, netting 28 goals and contributing to 103 clean sheets.
The two-time PL, FA Cup and UEL winner and one-time UCL winner has been with the Eagles since 2019 but his current deal expired recently.
The Sun claims that the club want him to stay on at Selhurst Park and have offered the player a new contract but that the Gers are circling.
It’s stated that the Light Blues are prepared to offer the 61-cap former England international more money – as much as £35,000-a-week – if the player moves to Ibrox on a free.
Manager Steven Gerrard is also already very well-stocked at centre-half, with Connor Goldson, Jack Simpson, Filip Helander, Leon Balogun, Lewis Mayo, George Edmundson, Leon King and Nikola Katic all already on the books.
However, the Gers have moved for Premier League veterans in the latest past, bringing in Jermain Defoe and Steven Davis from Bournemouth and Southampton respectively, while Steve knows Gary well having played alongside him for their country.
Any transfer would surely be dependent on others departing Ibrox first but Cahill is a proven winner and it will be interesting to see if this rumoured interest leads anywhere over the coming weeks.
In other news, Rangers, Aston Villa, Norwich, Newcastle United and Tottenham are all tracking Caleb Chukwuemeka, with the Villains seeing the first bid for the Northampton Town attacker rejected, according to the Daily Mail.
He made 28 appearances across all competitions for the Cobblers last campaign following a brief loan stint at Corby Town in early 2020.
He only netted two goals and grabbed one assist as the club were relegated from League One, but the vast majority of his games came from the bench.
The Gers were first linked with the 19-year-old sensation last month when the Daily Mail reported that they had registered interest and were eyeing a cut-price deal.
It was suggested that with the star’s current deal set to expire in January, Rangers could take advantage of cross-border regulations to snap Caleb up for as little as £60,000.
